Now that’s a great Zonker look that Rick has on him. I just went through my pile of books & found a 1970 paperback comprising many of his of strips from 1970 – BD in VietNam & his meeting up with Phred, his VC (viet-cong-gah, never thought I’d have to explain VC) and their search food but found the jackpot instead: a dozen cases of beer. 40+ years of great strips. GT, many many thanks, thanks, thx…

I can only imagine what it must feel like to have someone hand you your Great Granddad membership card. I would feel ancient.

Surely you are being sarcastic about Joanie. Let bygones be bygones. In 1972, Joanie had an argument with her husband over her rights as a woman. She leaves him and hitches a ride with Mike Doonesbury and Mark Slackmeyer who were traveling cross country. JJ is her daughter from her first marriage and she feels incredibly guilty about having lost contact with her but soon reconciles. Joanie had to come along due to the times. She went to law school and worked for Lacey Davenport in Congress, another beloved character. Go Joanie!

I think Joanie is dwelling on the fact that the twit from yesterday mentioned in a round about way, that the Senator may have hired her because she IS old. So now Joanie has doubts about her worth to the Senator.

I’ve got friends who are having to raise their great-granchildren. For the guy in his 60s, it’s not too bad. For the guy in his 90s who’s confined to a wheel chair, it’s a bit more problematic. At least for them, it’s only after school care, not a 24/7 living arangement.

Rick is not Alex’s grandfather. Rick is only whats-his-name’s dad. Joanie was married before. Please, PLEASE, GT, if you read our comments—I am BEGGING you not to turn Alex into her mother. Maybe we can have a flashback to Alex’s birth?! (Among its several awfulnesses was that Mike and JJ were already separated.)

Here’s the start of the whole saga, September 10, 1972. Note: Joanie’s husband’s name was Clinton Caucus. Ain’t THAT a kick in the head?

@Linguist, if you’re still here…Appreciated your response, many hours ago now, to someone who corrected your word usage. Courteous and to the point. I’d add that for some reason, it seems harder for me to get everything right on gocomics than anywhere else I have occasion to type. I’m both a linguist and a grammarian (!) and a writer and an editor and a proofreader, sometimes all at once, and it’s all great fun, but the point here is the exchange of ideas and opinions, not the perfecting of the prose. Your posts are always thoughtful, and as far as I can recall, never insulting to anybody. Thanks.

@NightGaunt "Typical Compulsive Grammarian, have nothing in them but the need to correct others. "
Many of those who post here have a great need to correct others, whether it concerns their grammar or their politics, but there is a great deal more to them than that!

@dinkytown “I think that a linguist is to a grammarian as a traffic engineer is to a school crossing guard.”
The most interesting school crossing guard I ever met had graduated from Cal Tech at age twenty with a degree in something so arcane I never could quite retain it. (I’m a grammarian, not a physicist.) She actually masterminded a beautiful drop-off-and-pick-up pattern for our new middle-and-high school, organized other volunteer parents to help carry it out, and got right up in the faces of those impatient parents who did not wish to wait their turns. She was the perfect blend of “traffic engineer,” “school crossing guard,” and “mama bear.” And her kids are just as gifted as she!

Ha, this is timely for me! I just saw the ultrasound pic of MY first great-grandchild, due in August :-)I’m still a few years younger than Joanie, but I’ve been married to a great-grandpa for about 3 years (well, we’ve been married for 27, but he became a great-grand in January 2 of 2010)!IIRC, Rick is a few years younger than Joanie, and he’s more in the position I was in 3 years ago, as a STEP-great. Cause Jeff is, as far as we know, “without issue.” Issues, yes, issue, no!As for my oldest, the grandma-to-be, so far she’s over the moon about it, and plans to be a kickass tattooed granny!

@Night-Gaunt I see your point. It’s always nice when someone who has previously shown nothing but fault-finding actually shares something interesting. I saw a couple of posts from our old buddy Tucci on another site recently, and they were calm and on topic and readable.

As for Joanie — lots of women woke up during the 70s and left their oppressive husband and the kids that were tying them to him. Tho I have the utmost sympathy for the kids, I can sure relate to the women who did what they needed to do to live.
