Ooh, first comment on Peanuts!Linus really shouldn’t pat birds on the head, they carry disease, but given that its a comic and he probably won’t get sick, I don’t see why he shouldn’t, so long as the birds like it too.
I always loved the rich history of Peanuts. Thirty years after this strip was drawn, Schulz did one with Rerun patting birds on the head. When Lucy rushed in to stop him, he told her that Linus had taught him to.
I agree with Jess. Whenever I went to Atlantic City I used to bring a 5 pound bag of birdseed (for the pigeons) and 2 loaves of bread for the sea gulls. Those pigeons were the friendliest wild birds ever. I would sit on the bench and as soon as I open the birdseed I would have a lap full of birds. On my shoulders on my lap, all over my feet and also a few times on my wrist eating out of my hands. The people I usually went with called me Birdman. One time during the summer one little girl wanted to take a picture with the birdman and the father took a couple of pictures of us and gave me $5. after that some more kids wanted to take pictures with the birdman and the parents usually gave me $5 (one $10) for my trouble. (Trouble? I was having fun.) When I ran out of birdseed and bread I wound up between $100 and $150. I can remember the exact amount. With that I got lunch at the buffet there and after went into the casino. I went one machine put 3 quarters in and hit $25, Ok ye machine. I go to the other end of the line to that last machine and another $25. The lady that got off said she was on it for an 45 minutes. My point is that you wont get sick from petting birds on the head. If that was true I would have been perpetually sick from all the times I fed the birds in Atlantic City.
And good for the birds for sticking their tongues out at Lucy. I would have done that too and blow a raspberry in her face.
Yes you can get sick from handling birds, especially pigeons. I am surprised that the birdman didn’t get pooped on by his customers. They carry diseases that humans can contract. The illness may not come right away, but constant exposure to the birds and what they poop out can lead to a serious illness. I learned about this when I heard that years ago a local politician died from being overexposed to pigeons.
I just realized that the original of this strip has an extra frame that has been edited out. It shows Charlie Brown watching Linus from behind a tree before he tattles to Lucy.
geez Lucy has to ruin Linus’ fun!!!!!..the birds liked it…why didn’t they peck her like in that Hitchcock movie The Birds???….she would have asked for it
This is actually the second time the bird patting issue came up. Some time before this Sunday strip, in a daily, CB watches Linus, then goes to Lucy and says Your brother pats birds on the head and leaves. Lucy says That’s a terrible thing to say to someone first thing in the morning. Which is pretty funny all by itself. And I remember the Rerun strip too… although Lucy was never as mean to Rerun as she was to Linus.

Lucy’s lucky that they don’t take the typical form of bird revenge, an overhead bombing campaign, if you follow my meaning.

It would be SO funny if the birds took revenge on Lucy.

I don’t normally get to comment first, especially not on famous strips like Peanuts. It was just my personal little moment of happiness.

If you do it enough in front of others, it will become the latest fad and everyone will be doing it.

Why is Charlie Brown helping Lucy be mean to Linus when Lucy is often mean to Charlie?
