Baldo: You know, everybody says cafeteria food is good for nothing... Baldo: But I disagree. Cruz: I think it rocks... totally. Tia Carmen: Where's the spaghetti sauce?
The fact that it can be used as paint should paint a good picture of what it tastes like (pun intended).
Still, they are served better cafeteria food than I was. Ick, thawed hamburgers still in a sealed plastic bag and pizza overflowing with grease. Don’t forget the iceberg lettuce and barely orange tomatoes they tried to pass as salad.
My favorite foods from the elementary cafeteria was the shepherd’s pie and the veal on a stick (breaded thin cutlet of meat on a lollipop stick – this was the late 60s/early 70s, may have actually been veal calf meat. Dropped from the menu when I was in/around 4th grade.
Then again, we students had a protest when the cost of a carton of milk went from 3 cents to 5 cents. They brought in the cafeteria ladies to explain out first lesson in bureaucratic purchasing (new supplier, milk subsidies, etc.). Most kids were bored, but I thought it was rather interesting.
I went to school in the 50’s and we actually had real food cooked by real people – with a variety of foodstuffs. Can’t stand the crap they serve my grandchildren.
Tomato soup and peanut butter/jelly sandwiches were my favorite. The lunch they serve now is so horrible, my daughter refuses to eat lunch at school – would rather starve the entire day and eat when she gets home from school.

My favorite cafeteria food of all time was the Salisbury steak and mashed potatoes with gravy. I could have eaten that every day.
