I’m surprised the name Vulcan, a major Roman god, hasn’t already been used for a solar system body. It was proposed as the name of a hypothetical planet between the Sun and Mercury, but Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity made its existence superfluous in 1915.
Dr. Mel, I know you only said that Pluto was based on Greek myth, but just for the record, Pluto himself was Roman.
Not only is Persephone taken, but so is the 2nd place finisher in the poll, Cerberus (an asteroid). Unsurprisingly, Vulcan finished first. These results are not binding on the IAU nomenclature committee.
Coyote, I whole heartily agree!…I assume you have read Christopher Moore’s Coyote Blue…A wonderful, and beautiful book…Coyote should be the first one. But, here in Ojibwa country, he’s called Manabezho, which, yes, would be a great name for a moon…..
Can’t say that I’m a fan of having a white line around a character or object when that character or object is in front of a black background. It makes it look like the characters were cut out and pasted onto the background. In the third panel, the clipboard in particular looks rather funky with its white border. Brewster has no white border in the third panel, and he looks just fine – better than he does in the first panel, and better than Dr. Mel in any of the panels. Just sayin’.

According to gmanetwork.com, the moon will probably be named Vulcan. This must be true, since it’s on the internet.

When are they going to start naming things after Native American mythology? I want a moon or planet named after me!

According to James Bolivar DiGriz, it is known as “dirt”, the mythical home of humans.

Pluto was not named for the god, it was named for it’s founder, Percival Lowell.

If you had Siphonaptera, you’d need Phthiraptera too — both fleas and lice!

So let the first person who walks on it name it!
