Far left girl: That was a serious hiccup! Boy in middle: I saw Pluto! Far right girl: Are you sure NASA didn't invent vernors? Frazz: Vernors predates NASA by 92 years.
Hurray for Vernors!!! That 2nd panel is great! The first drink from a fresh bottle always goes straight up the nose. It’s exquisite agony! Gotta learn to let it settle a bit, first. I remember walking past the gnome sign, I think it was on Woodward. With fish and chips or the Christmas ham, Vernors is a must. Thanks for this, Jef!
Hot Vernor’s when sick, cold vernor’s over vanilla ice cream in the summer… childhood comfort beverage for Detroit kids for sure. The only ginger ale that competes is Jamaican Ginger.
Vernors is incredible it’s about the only sodapop I’ll drink. I great if your sick, it’s fantastic ice cold after days work, and it was in the original ice cream float.
1866 – Vernors ginger ale was introduced.1930 – Pluto was discovered, deemed a planet.1958 – NASA was founded.2006 – Pluto classified as a dwarf planet, and not a planet.Today – I favorited this strip. :)
I tried one a few weeks ago. I managed to choke down half the can. I remember liking Canada Dry as a kid, will have to try that one again to see if I just lost the taste for ginger ale.
WOW, a Vernors reference, When I lived in the NYC metro area I would buy at least 3 cases to drag back whenever visiting WNY, it’s got a great bite and also makes a great batter for frying fish or chiken.
Many grocery stores with an ethnic aisle or area will have a product called ginger beer. It is non alcoholic, tastes nothing like beer, and leaves a slight burn in the throat on the way down. I believe it is very similar to the Jamaican ginger sodas. I think ginger beer is a little stronger than Vernor’s, but the oak casks Vernor’s was aged in did always give it a different taste than just ginger.
Oh, it’s been so long! I’ve gotta have one now! True GINGER ale! Fusilier, I wonder if you can still get the original formula at specialty soda places, like Galco’s in L.A.
Only a Michigander old enough to have tasted the original knows Vernor’s. Nothing like pouring it in a glass and get nailed up the snout by the jumpin’ Jehosaphat!

[old curmudgeon mode]It isn’t like it was back in the ‘50s and ’60s! THEN Vernor’s was really Vernor’s. Now it’sjust another brand of pop.[/oc mode]

Those older, small glass bottles could contain more carbonation. The same amount in a can would blow out the top.

it took me awhile to like vernors again, my mom used to give it to me whenever I got sick as a child so in a certain respect I was like Pavlovs dog.

What if you pour it on your Cocoa Puffs? Will you see Alpha Centauri up close?

This is all making me thirsty for one. Love it any way I can get it. I especially fondly remember Vernors floats!

Sadly… Unless its changed again, Vernor’s isn’t what it used to be. :( ( got sold iirc, so doesn’t have quite the bit anymore.)
