have you evere noticed that when the stories get to draggen the comments get to lagan? I was looking back at some of the numbers and it just seemed a strange trend but I dont no nutten really.
I don’t think even they can save this cats radio show. Maybe he should bring in the Bits O’ Honey. By the way, RIP Bobbie Smith. The “Rubberband Man” was 76. So many legends lost this year, and it’s only March.
Montana Joe reminds me a bit of the jovial and rotund Smilin’ Ed McConnell, who had a Saturday morning radio show (although it wasn’t a music show). And The Sounds O’ Plenty remind me of The Carter Family. And that’s not bad!
The inking of the lines in Joe’s face are very reminiscent of Chester Gould’s technique ~ good job,Staton & Curtis! Now….what the heck is he holding in his hand?
For those who may not know: When Jerome Trohs was on the run, he hopped a freight and hooked up with Montana Joe’s traveling Rodeo Show, until he found he couldn’t stay on a horse. I don’t know if Montana Joe made any other appearances after that.
Any idea what the sign, on the wall behind the exec in panel 1, says? First two letters look like “SB” or maybe a blocky “se”? Presumably the name of the broadcasting company or station that hosts Montana Joe’s show? Or perhaps something to do with his sponsor, Sunny Wheat?
When did Gravel Gertie go blonde? She’s been grey as long as I can remember, including during the Measles story. Maybe she felt she needed to for the benefit of her new show biz career :-) For that matter, I never remember B. O. having any color to his hair; it was always just the black lines. If he wasn’t wearing a hat his hair was usually falling into his face and I seem to remember little dots suggestive if insects flying around his head. The color, being combed back out of his face, and lack of activity around his head makes him look better groomed, as someone else commented.
Well, the comments also “lag” when our troll crew takes a vacation, since they usually end up providing half of them. Ok, so right now we only have Double-up, BB Eyes, and Abner K. getting released and ready-to-go, Moon Maid being investigated, Jumbler doing his thing, and BO Plenty and clan doing theirs…..we need a few MORE story lines to run concurrently with these…..that’s simply not enough! Seriously, the effect this has on me is to deflate the intensity built up previously……it’s like constantly walking into the middle of a story…..make the story and characters interesting enough and there’s no need to constantly skip around….when reading all the old stuff (Pruneface, Brow, Flattop, 88 Keys, etc) I couldn’t stop reading until that particular episode was finished…..in part because it didn’t go running off in all directions….

Why this interuption to the main story when there was a natual gap between storylines just a couple of weeks ago?

The Jumbler is short. He could be the next Joe Atom for Montana Joe.

I’m surprised a Saturday morning radio show is viable at all! Montana Joe must be one heck of a showman.

The Brow did say that Gravel Gertie has “The voice of an angel”.

I thought sponsors only withdraw sponsorship. Networks cancel a show. Someone at the network needs to sell air time!
