I think “What?” is an appropriate response when interrupted with words that have nothing to do with the subject at hand. And that’s assuming “There are.” is a complete sentence by itself.

I was a budding Grammar Nazi as a teenager, but luckily my parents managed to nip it in the bud. Now I can’t stand people like that.

Recently more people are saying “a” apple, “a” elephant instead of “an”. It hurts my ears. English 101.

“My future mother-in-law(a kindergarten teacher) said: I don’t know, can you?”My son-in-law always says that to his kids when they ask, “Can I . . .?” He never explains why he says it. It has occurred to me to explain to them what he means, next time I’m up there and it happens.

The easiest way I have found to deal with someone like that is to stop talking. And, if possible, leave the room.

@gokie5. Must be something about kindergarten teachers! My daughter-in-law does that. I try to be careful what I say to her.

If “Rules and Regs” is the title of a document then it’s “there is” not “There are”

Ah, grammar Nazis, where form trumps function. Every damn time.

I have a problem with people who say deers or sheeps and really mangle the English language. If you can’t speak correctly without “you know”, “and like”, and cursing every other word, you shouldn’t speak at all. Whatever you are trying to say gets lost when you extend it with unnecessary words.

I can see that that’d be annoying. However, that reminds me of my favorite movie lines of all time: Excerpt from Large Marge’s soliloquy in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure: “. . . I saw the worst accident I ever seen. . . . Yes, sir, that was the worst accident I ever seen . . .”
