One of my buddies dogs guts a stuffed animal every nite I stop over to play video games, allmost like a sacrifice or offering. Funny I hate dogs yet I speek canine very fuluently, figure that one out.
This is just like what I have imagined our lab to be thinking on occasion- you would catch her at something and she would look at you very bewildered that you were angry.
The first thing my shepherd did with every toy was immediately do a “squeakerectomy” on it to remove the squeaker then pull out all the stuffing and shake the carcass to death.
My dog sleeps on two small comforters. Each day I would refold both blankets and after awhile holes were being torn through the top comforter, because my dog scratched at her blankets each night to arrange them into a little nest. She taught me to leave her covers alone and now her bed looks messy, but it is arranged as she likes it and no more holes have appeared.

How can you tell why they’re so soft unless you look?

Is there something about letting all the stuffing out that escapes you?
