Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for April 16, 2013
Transcript:
TEDDY: I was right! This school handbook says that teachers have to retire at age seventy! NATE: Ah ha! So Mr. Galvin's probably going to retire any minute! He's got to be almost seventy! TEDDY: Maybe he's just one of those people who look older than they really are. NAtE: Teddy, the man's ancient! He writes in cursive! TEDDY: What's cursive? NATE: You're making my point.

Cursive? Spencerian or Palmer method?
DalDorlasman over 11 years ago
5th comment. Cursive is not ancient, I learned it 4 years ago. Plus, maybe he’s 71 so he can find a loophole to teach boring stuff to kids all day.

Real world applications of cursive: signing your name.Everything else should be typed or printed. The worst handwriting I see on a consistent basis is people who try to write in cursive.

Heh, maybe Teddy’s 5, but he skipped.Plus, I learned cursive when I was in 2nd grade, so does that mean I’m old, cause I’m pretty sure I’m in 6th grade!

I saw a 78 year old(I believe so) who ran the Marathon yesterday, during the explosions. He got interviewed by ESPN. When he did, I noticed he looked like Mr. Galvin for some reason(NO PUN INTENDED)

I was never any good at cursive writing (and no I’m not old) but you can read my signature. My children know how to do it as well, except for my youngest but she’ll learn.

ellisaana: I “learned?” by the Palmer method. I could get the push-pulls and ovals within a hair of accuracy – but my handwriting, while readable, suffered in the aesthetics department. It helped me be a professional modeler, but, alas, effective tremor has removed that from my CV.

Well, at least you’re being honest. Cursive. I do write in cursive with a mix of print.

Maybe he is like Professor Binns and will teach for all of eternity.

I have a conclusion!Maybe when he was around 20 years old in the late Craetacious period,he tripped on a baby spinosaurus egg which made the mama spinosaurus angry which then caused her to chase Gavin. He later jumped in some river which (was by the way used by some T-Rex who didn’t flush)was the lake of youth which caused the spinosaurus to run away.

I’m not surprised the schools don’t teach cursive any longer. They teach religion and political opinion as science. I’m surprised they teach math because that would disprove the lies of these so called ‘tax plans’ of the extremists. In fact, we should just close all the schools because then NRA won’t have to defend the slaughter of school children.

Politics here? (Rickapolis). I expect it on the Get Fuzzy site, but not here. Anyhow, my cursive handwriting (which is different from my cursive driving vocabulary) has become more of a scrawl. And my children complained they couldn’t read it.

If Nate plans on taking the SAT when he gets to high school, he’d better learn cursive. There’s a very important part of that test that the students are required to write in cursive. When I proctor an SAT, I always write on the whiteboard, in cursive, “Does anyone not know what cursive writing is?” And then I actually had one kid copy my question instead of the paragraph I directed the class to copy… That’s our future, there, people. (SMH)

It was known as “script” when I learned it. “Cursive” came later. I remember when my kids referred to it as “Cursive”. Sorry Nate, I predate “Cursive” and I’m not yet 70 years old.
hippogriff over 11 years ago
ellisaana: I have heard handwriting experts say that uncial is easier to identify than cursive, so I doubt any technological unemployment there. Computer will be more difficult than typewriter, though..Keeper 98: “Script” and “print” gave way to cursive and uncial because of accuracy. Both were script and print was what Gutenburg developed.
