Mom: Everyone will say, "Who is that little girl in the party dress? I can't take my eyes off her!" Alice: Petey! Mom says nobody's going to even notice you at that oboe thing with me wearing my party dress. Alice: No, wait, I didn't- Alice!

If I were Petey, I’d be relieved that Mom bought Alice the outfit; ’twill make me less nervous of people looking at me during my oboe recital.

Madeline’s consternation is painfully clear, but this time at least Alice’s remark was not ill-intended, and as templo SUD and Pacopuddy say, may actually reduce Petey’s stress symptoms….

It seems a lot of commenters here identify with Petey. I know I do. I even played the oboe in junior high. And I would have been grateful for anything that distracted the audience.
