Caulfield: You know the expression "When pigs fly"? Why Pigs? Why not cows or hippos or something even more aerodynamically inappropriate? Frazz: You know the expression "some people will get worked up over anything"? Caulfield: That's not an official expression.

Because pigs DID fly, when launched from catapults over castle walls to spred disease durning sieges..Though they were dead at the time.

I prefer the extended version:
At the end of yet another day…
All staff happy and working hard All projects under control All deadlines being metAll systems functioning smoothly for fully satisfied customers All pigs fed, watered, and ready to fly.

There is a fairly complete treatment of this particular urban legend at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumblebee. I think the real idea was to poke fun at the hubris of people who think you can reduce the complexity of dynamic systems like bumblee flight (or economies, or global climate) to a few back-of-the-envelope calculations).

Cowwwww—sounds like the trajectory. Hippopotamus: as long as the flight, forget it. Pig: short, explosive, declarative, to the point, comes abruptly to a stop. By the sound of the word, a pig doesn’t fly it goes splat.
Umm, bacon…
