Trying to get my grandson to do his summer reading was torture.

The other kids hated me. I usually read the entire list the first week so it wasn’t hanging over my head for the summer.

We never had summer reading, but I didn’t care. When I could dodge the farm work, I read anything I could get my hands on. I lived 3 miles from the county library and could only check out 2 books. I was making the trip (walking) almost every other day. The librarian once took the books I brought back and started asking me questions as she turned through them. What she was doing was checking to see if I actually read the books. When she was satisfied that I had read them, she told me that I could check out as many as I wanted at one time. After I had read all the juvenile section that interested me, I was in the 8th or 9th grade, she introduced me to adult (no, not porn, adult as in grown up) literature. One year I had a new English teacher, who had access to a program that provided cheaply made, usually hard back, books to students at a low price. I discovered Science Fiction. More than a half century later I still have some of those books.
