these days, many of the tall metal slides are being replaced with shorter “tube” slides. There is too much concern that kids’ll fall off or else have to experience a hot seat like Calvin…..
I think I make that same face (panel 2) when I sit down the the black leather seats of my convertiable after being parked in the sun with the top down.
I have not commented nor read the comments busy with on-line studies. What happened to Hobbes the commentator.Calvin is right the ride is boiling hot. When I walked outside wearing rubber sole shoes for walking two separate pairs on bottom melted and tore up.
Actually Puddleglum2, that quote says that the earth is flat. A circle is a 2-D geometric figure. The earth is a sphere (or more nearly an oblate spheroid).
I remember those days. Slide is too hot to ride due to the sun, and it is too hot outside to wear anything other than shorts, and it is too expensive to go to the pool (and mom is afraid of the risk of drowning).

They always faced south, so they’d get extra hot.

Better go for a jump into the pool!

We used to take sheets of waxed paper to sit on. Not only did it protect your legs a bit, after a couple of slides you zipped down that thing!

A really clever guy would anticipate an even hotter second glide, caused by friction, not so, Calvin ?
blackielawless over 11 years ago
his parents should take him to a pool that has a slide.

those old metal sliding boards were always that way. They needed to be placed in the shady part of the park.

The last time I checked, it was called a slide, not a ride, Calvin. Lol

Sand helped smooth the slides too—even if it didn’t do much for the heat. But on hot days, the swings were better—you always had some sort of breeze.

Deja vu for me here… I used to be terrified of the slide when I was 4 years old.
When I got a bit older I started to love it and it was the only thing I would go on in the park.

Calvin’s mistake was hesitating. Just start sliding as soon as the butt touches metal.
