Calvin has amply demonstrated his commitment to G.R.O.S.S.ness in the past. And his abiding faith in devious, complicated schemes is truly touching. Love their smug expressions in the last panel…!
Calvin must have gotten the idea for handing out medals for every failure from school, where no matter how big a failure you are they still give you awards to increase your self esteem. Although I don’t think any of the kids are actually fooled by that.
I remember when I was a kid bottle caps had cork liners. We’d peel out the cork, put the cap on the outside of our shirt and replace the cork liner on the inside of the shirt, and voila! instant medal.

Good times…good times…
I can emphasize with Calvin’s sentiments in the first panel. No plan is any good unless it is too complicated to understand.
There’s a lot of low-hanging fruit from the political arena on this. I will pass and instead take a lesson from history.
In WW II, the Japanese Navy was a formidable force. One of their problems was that their battle plans were so complicated that they were difficult to execute and fell off the tracks easily when the smallest thing went wrong.
Even in modern day, Japanese tend to over-plan. This is excellent when things go by the book. It’s one of the main reasons their quality is so high; their processes are consistent and manageable. However when something happens that is not in the book, things stop dead in their tracks.
Americans, on the other hand, tend to make things up as we go along – not to much differently than our friend, Calvin.
flashforward to today, Calvin sitting in his office behind a dest with files piled high, used as a fort and Hobbes in the bottom right drawer holding down the fort.

Calvin seems to have gotten over getting drenched by Susie pretty quickly. Those bottle caps must have been the shiny ones.

Anyone out there remember when bottle caps had cork liners that could be removed and used to attach the bottle cap to your shirt?
bmonk about 11 years ago
Another thing that makes a great club is the titles. But not the club anthem.
ACTIVIST1234 about 11 years ago
Must be an old time metal bottle cap, the kind the big kids removed with their teeth. Otherwise, it wouldn’t stick to Hobbes’s chest.

actually I was thinking more…those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it…or for Calvin maybe those who don’t’ finally wise up
