Wow. I never knew how small Calvin was compared to Miss. Wormwood, until now. Haha

And just try pulling that stunt at work in about 15 or 20 years, Calvin. If you think Miss Wormwood is tough, just wait until you meet your first boss!

Miss Wormwood looks like my first boss, who was a first sergeant.

Looks just like Mrs Beaman, my second grade teacher. These days they call em “mood swings” and there’s medical help for it. In 1966, we just cowered—and behaved like angels.

In panel 3, Calvin’s arm span looks quite a bit smaller than Miss Wormwood’s. Note that he is startled in that panel and he’s dropping his book. Also note that his hair may or may not be standing on end, since it always does anyway.

If I had a student like Calvin, I’d be poppin’ me some mood enhancers.

Today’s strip is from 1993. Calvin has been trying to escape from Miss Wormwood for seven years. Here’s one from 1986:Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (February 20, 1986)In addition to being able to judge when he is through, Calvin is also very good at determining when he is not through:Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (October 28, 1992)

I wonder how Calvin would so in a Sudbury School setting (where he can indeed decide all on his own when he is done learning, and is utterly free to go outside and play Calvinball or whatever).

All of my elementary school teachers were very nice, but the principle was a terror.Could make you cry and wet your pants with that look. BTW,the only adult male in K-8 was the janitor.

When my husband was wakened for the second day of first grade (no K then and there) he said no, that was alright, he’d already been there yesterday. Grew up very straight arrow; just shows there’s a little of Calvin in all of us.

I threw an airplane in the air,It fell to earth I know not where.I wish I hadn’t thrown it,Or the teacher hadn’t known it,Or the courts would grant me voluntary prayer.

Poor Calvin! He’s such a free spirit in a world that discourages freedom and spirit. I love his imagination. Especially when it runs away with him. :)
