Calvin: I'm doing a crossword puzzle Hobbes: Hmm. . . Calvin: I've got it Yellow-bellied sapsucker Hobbes: But there are only five boxes. Calvin: I know. These idiots make you write real small.
Here’s a Peanuts strip drawn by Charles Schulz only one year before his death. That’s Rerun, Linus’s little brother, working on the puzzle with Snoopy. Schulz’s beautiful pen lines had become irregular because of the continual shaking of his right hand, and he had to use his left hand to steady his right hand as he drew very slowly. If you click on the enlarged version, you can see each movement of the cartoonist’s shaking hand on the back of Rerun’s head, especially in panel 4. Nevertheless, Charles Schulz still drew amazingly well in spite of his handicap.Click here: Peanuts (January 10, 1999)
Snoopy once figured out the name of a bird, also. This turned out to be a bird who flew both horizontally and vertically:Click here: Peanuts (June 22, 1970)
My problem with crosswords is that I come up with a word that fits and is perfect. Later I find that other perfect words aren’t fitting through it. So I look at the answer and my word was wrong. The word that was right is one I’d never even heard of before and needed to get a dictionary to find out what it meant! Why not just use the common word?

@Hobbes,Cross-bird puzzle? That’s ‘cuckoo’, …’loon’y, even! (Snagglepuss) jkWell, at least you didn’t break any ‘cardinal’ rules for puns, and you weren’t plagiarizing (‘robin’ someone else’s work), or even ’parrot’ing it. Since you are not only clever but experienced at punning, I can’t call you a ’bird’geoning punster.

Why do they make you write so small? It’s a real puzzle. And, for Puddleglum: Maybe it’s a cross-bird puzzle.

This was a bit long, but enjoyable and had many chuckles. I feel I must annoy some of my friends and share this with them.

@AlexikakosJust a guess, but the humor of George Carlin may have been involved in your English essay.

One day Calvin’s spouting post-graduate algorithms; the next day he can’t match his socks. Any chance he’s bi-polar?

Of course reality will adjust to you, and not the other way around Calvin. A common malady for every person. It’s just a matter of degree.
