Of course Nate does not like being picked on. He is a reluctant student, there because he has to be not because he enjoys it. Mrs. Godfrey has to teach him. He called her a rude name and needs to take his consequence. The name she called him was not uttered aloud and he didn’t hear her. Nate is at the stage where he is learning responsibility for what he says and does.

Godfrey didn’t call him anything. Not a thing.

Mrs. Godfrey didn’t say anything out loud, she just thought something rude about Nate. Nobody gets to control or criticize what another person is thinking in the privacy of their mind. Or are we now the Thought Police?

Let’s all face the fact that even WE would do that.

Alright guys, stop getting in a huge argument. The point of the strip was to show how much of a hypocrite Mrs. Godfrey is, but you guys are acting like they’re real people. I love Big Nate, but seriously, you guys are taking it too far. How much do you actually pay attention to your own life, or do you just live on this site?

Nate needed to be put in detention for what he said. He blames her when he doesn’t study for a test and fails. He blames when he has a week to do a project but only spends one hour the night before it’s due and gets a poor grade. Being a teacher is a hard job. If she occasionally has a rude thought about a student it’s human nature. She has learned not to say everything that pops into her head. This is something Nate needs to learn, maybe this detention will help.

See, Mrs. Godfrey, she just is a bad person altogether. There was a point when she gave nate a detention for calling her a cow, but she is a hypocrite by calling him a name too. Only difference was she didn’t say it out loud.

Even thinks bad things when they’re angry. Thoughts are hard to control and impossible to censor. It’s not hypocritical to get mad at someone for speaking their hurtful thoughts out loud if you have the self-control to keep it in your head.

Thinking a mean thought isn’t bad, guys. We all do it.

I think that, besides being offensive, your choice of slurs is way beyond what the incident calls for. She gave a kid a detention, she didn’t flog Nate or give a press conference to out him. And, yes, being called names can hurt long after detentions are forgotten.

This storyline reminds me of my nephew Josh. He’s in 7th grade and he’s always been a bit small. There’s this really big girl in his class, who has bullied him for years. A couple weeks ago she deliberately tripped him at lunch and he called her a “fat whore.” Well, Josh is in big trouble, and of course, the bully gets away with it.

I remember stuff like that and I sure don’t miss being in school!!!

Why don’t you leave Nate alone once and for all?!

Nate’s a little jerk and he deserves every bit of discipline he gets. As for Ms. Godfrey, unless you say it, it doesn’t count.

Subtle difference between saying and thinking things. I’ve done some unspeakable things in my mind. Who hasn’t?

Treated like what?? He got detention for calling her a “fat old cow.” He’s not exactly being treated unfairly. Mrs. Godfrey did not say inappropriate things about Nate. She didn’t even say anything. She is entitled to her own thoughts, and frankly, I agree with her.

You guys can criticize Godfrey all you want, She’s still the adult and Nate is still the kid. They are not equals. She’s the teacher, he’s the student. I would be likely think something unprintable about a kid that behaves as disrespectfully as he does. She didn’t say it out loud however and did no damage to Nate as he did to her. There’s nothing wrong with Miss Godfrey, she simply requires a certain level of performance and behavior with which Nate feels he shouldn’t have to comply.

This discussion is going in circles. Why don’t we just put it to rest and see what tomorrow’s strip is?

One of the signs of growing up is accepting that other people will have differing opinions and not going on and on trying to get them to agree with you.
