So Retik and Stellaluna have honest intentions. I am glad they are truly looking out for Mysta. I hope their dream comes true. I also hope my dreams comes true, which is that Mysta is really alive, and not a clone.
Extremely cool. I like Dr. Sail’s floating head, narrating the flashback of Retik and Stellaluna. Reminiscent of classic comic books from the 50s and 60s.
Morning, VistaBill, whenever you are! (To paraphrase Jimmy Durante)So one mystery is answered, and the story of Retik and Stellalluna also explains their devotion to Mysta.Really enjoying this story.
Dick Tracy sighting over at Gasoline Alley today….well, almost. Actually a Fearless Fosdick appearance. Fosdick was Al Capps parody of Tracy who appeared in the Lil’ Abner series.
Stellaluna looks (to me) like she shares some genes with Liz…. wouldn’t that be a great segue? One thing Mike and Joe are doing to the max, and that’s they are keeping us flowing with hotties!
Ray Toler and Willie007: An explanation of sorts regarding my feelings about Moon Governor yesterday. It was not against the Moon Era, per se.
As far as the Moon Era goes, “it is what it is.”
My concern regarding the Moon Governor is that he did not appear to be a good character. Story lines that I have read from the era seem to suggest that whenever MG was on the scene, DT (and whoever was with him at the moment) would be in heap deep kimshi.
On the other hand, this is supposed to be a long story. And the complications he is sure to bring to the table will probably make for a story in and of themselves. But my fear is that bringing back MG might bring back the worst fears of the non-Moon Era fans – silly science, Flash Gordon, and some really hard to understand revenge plots.
On a very personal note: Another part of my prejudice against Moon Governor is an episode in my personal life.
My father left us when I was very young. Making a long story short, some 45 years after the fact, I was reunited with my father. Very little good has come of this reunion, if anything, it has brought even more heartache. (Among other things, he seems to not regret the things he did which hurt other people, including my mother and me)
So, please forgive me, Moon Era fans and foes. In general, I welcome the return of at least Mysta, and perhaps a limited return to the Moon Era.
But I really don’t look forward to the whole schlemiel.
What I saw of Moon Governor before makes him not as welcome as his daughter.
Yes, the Governor was a hot-head. While some of his anger was justified, as there were numerous attempts on Mysta’s life, he was not an especially interesting character. He was rightly appalled at the violence of earthlings, yet never exhibited the characteristics of a thoughtful leader. Whether on the moon or in the suburbs, he was not the man you’d want for your father-in-law.That said, I am curious as to where he is and whether or not he is aware that his daughter is alive. Did he play a role in her rescue/recovery (if this is indeed Mysta)? This story is complex and compelling. Hat’s off to Team Tracy.
The Moon Governor will definitely not be welcomed back to the strip in the same way as Moon Maid. Although I do expect to see him appear some time in this arc. After all, this story was set up last Christmas when Tracy took Honeymoon to the Moon to meet her grandfather so I expect that reunion to eventually take place. Other than Moon Governor and his wife (never named), I don’t believe any other Moon people ever played any significant role in the strip.
The Moon Governor was a dictator. Although the Moon women were often shown happy and frolicing, the men were often shown in uniform and marching; and Moon Governor had a significant army. It makes you wonder why, if they were the only people on the moon, he would need such a large army with advanced technological weapons if not to supress his own people?
The Moon Governor could be protective and loving of his own family and could be quite charming when hosting parties and celebrations and also when dealing with people on Earth. However, he could turn quickly and become treacherous, deceitful and self-serving. He was NOT used to ever dealing with anyone NOT under his command and WAS used to having his every utterance carried out. His moods could change on a whim.
In short, Moon morality was not Earth morality. Hmmm…No sense of morals, treachery, deceit, cruelty…Moon aside, this seems like a perfect character for Dick Tracy. I remember when I was a kid reading the strip, I used to become furious at the Moon Governor when it was revealed (as it often was) that the Moon Governor was secretly acting against Tracy and Earth for his own purposes. Seriously, as a kid I hated this guy but loved to see him in the strip and actually wouldn’t mind seeing him and his wife again.
The evacuation of the Moon (as discovered last Christmas) may end the constant trips to the Moon (overused by Gould in my opinion). But, it leaves a bigger mystery of what happened to them and where did they go. Were they actually gone or were there bodies on the Moon? Until this is solved, I will feel sorry for Honeymoon. I still remember the tears in her eyes last Dec. 27th when she cried, “Where’re my Grandparents? WHAT HAPPENED TO EVERYONE?!!”
Wouldn’t it be interesting if the “moon people” are now on earth in some inaccessible place very cold to us?_________________________
This has been my thought as well. I expect them to be in some hidden glacier at the North Pole or something similar. I think it would be too much if it was revealed they went to Mars or some other planet and more ridiculous if they left the solar system. Since they were humanoid and sexually compatible with Earth people, I suspect that their race initially evolved on Earth and somehow in ancient days migrated to the Moon. But that is awfully sci-fi oriented and would take a lot of panel time in the strip to explain. Still, I am curious about the backstory of the Moon race.
Moon Maid was so powerful that she had to be side lined or it would be the Superman Syndrome which is a tough nut to crack. Then it would become the Moon Maid strip not Dick Tracy. She was too good to be used too much.________________________
I think you are correct in this assertion. In fact, although I tended to like the Moon Era, I did not like the continued use of Moon Maid to help Tracy catch crooks and solve crimes. It was too easy. Need a lock opened? Have MM electronically work the combination. Need to stop a crook? Have MM freeze him in his tracks.
Ironically, if this is the original Mysta, it is perhaps her powers that saved her from the explosion. In an old strip I discovered this panel indicating that energy and force are useless on her. What are the effects of an explosion except energy and force?
However, I am keeping an open mind on whether or not this Mysta is the original or a clone or someone brainwashed to think she is Mysta. Dr. Ghote still makes me think this whole thing is leading up to a fraud. I also think Diet Smith knows about all of this since he was mentioned yesterday by Sail, who apparently thought Smith’s help in the matter would not be a problem. Sail said he would contact Diet Smith. Has he been in contact before or was he just planning to call out of the blue and say, “Hi Mr. Smith, I know I am a complete stranger to you but can you take the space coupe out of mothballs and fly me to the moon?” NOT LIKELY. Diet Smith is complicit in this Moon Maid regeneration.

OK, I gotta ask…..how is the name “Retik” moon-related?

in children’s literature, there is a story of a bat named stellaluna (published back in the ’80’s)

So, a little exposition to affirm that Retik and Stellaluna are in fact humans, from Earth, and not anything else….

Hidden glacier at the North Pole? Holy Fortress of Solitude, Batman! Isn’t that where Superman hangs out?
Glad to see that you think “trips to the moon” were over-used, as well, Ray.
But I agree that these are people with a story. And, I suppose it’s about time that story got told.
