A Five Cent cone and a 15 Cent soa – could be as late as the 40s. In the 30s, the average guy could take his girlfriend to a movie, then stop off at the local diner for a hamburger and a cup of coffee. The hamburger included the burger on a bun with lettuce, tomato, pickle and a baked potato, mashed plus a potato with gravy. hash browns, or French Fries, – plus a slice of apple or cherry pie for a quarter. That would be two movie tickets, two hamburgers, two cups of coffee – and, in those days, the cup of coffee was never-ending. Once you ordered a cup of coffee, the waitress would keep returning to fill up your cup until you were ready to leave – all for a quarter. So if ice cream had gone up to 5 cents for a cone and 15 cents for a soda – it must have been in the 40s.
In the 50’s, in Colorado at Buckskin Joe’s, coffee was 5¢…your cup never got below half full without the waitress topping it off. You finally had to tell her no more, thanks.
Reminds me of a story about baseball player Jackie Brandt. One day in spring training he and 2 teammates decided to go out for some ice cream. The two others wanted to go someplace close by, but Brandt insisted they take a long trip out on the highway to that place with the 28 flavors.
When they arrived the other two ordered some exotic flavors. Brandt after scouring the menu ordered vanilla. They could have killed him.

And that, boys and girls, is why the menu was invented.
