Transcript:
Peter: Whatcha doing? Jason: Putting the finishing touches on my encryption/decryption software. With the recent revelations that our government likely has backdoor access to everyone's phone records and online activity, I figure people with what a way to restore a sense of privacy to their digital lives. So I'm writing code that will cloak a person's communications and data in such a way that even the NSA won't be able to monitor or crack it. I'll make it a free download via bittorrent sites. No one will be able to stop its spread! Soon the entire world will be using it! It's like a sure thing, Peter! I'm going to be rich! Peter: You just said it's free... Jason: Well, the backdoor access I'll sell to governments won't be.

Actually, I believe a “back door” is a legal requirement for any encryption software to be distributed in the U.S., and has been for many years.

OK, I guess I should have Googled this first. According to a story at http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20032910-281.html: “In response to lobbying from the FBI, a House committee in 1997 approved a bill that would have banned the manufacture, distribution, or import of any encryption product that did not include a back door for the federal government. The full House never voted on that measure.” (Related transcript at http://jya.com/hir-hear.htm.)

You’ve obviously never read “Bloom County”. It’s Holmes.

He’s a very smart kid. I was wondering if Bill you read these comments. As our prodigy son is smart I would like him to comment about video game addiction, have a sequel on that but in some humorous manner. In my greater family there are three members who are now either VGA ( confessed Video Game Addict in recovery), or playing just a little or in total denial of the obsession. Although I appreciate your strip has to be funny I also like it as it does make social commentary. Give it a shot if you like. Thanks for my daily smile too!

Dear everyone: The correct name of the Bloom County haracter is Oliver Wendell Jones, as can be seen in this strip. As his Wikipedia page says, Oliver Wendell Jones was named after Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., hence the confusion.

I wrote a free encryption program in the 90’s. I never thought about adding a backdoor and selling it to the government. Hmm how silly of me.

@ K.C. Fahel & Bruno Zeigerts – I have read “Bloom County” for many years and it is “Oliver Wendel Jones” not Holmes. Oliver Wendell Homes is the real life character who was an associate Justice on the Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932. The cartoon character is a spoof on his name.

This isn’t fiction. We used that technique 40 years ago in Army encryption. The ??? was ingenious.
