Thank you for pointing that out, Monty; though I think most of us could get it on our own. Moondog (one must conclude) is not as bright as the average squirrel (who would avoid that rather obvious trap)….
1)Even if a squirrel fell in there, what’s to stop them from just climbing out? An animal that can climb up the side of a tree and walk on a electric power line like a tightrope walker could surely climb up the side of a hole. You need a cage kind of trap to catch an animal like a squirrel.2) How did Monty fall in the hole in the first place? In the third panel it shows he was leaning forward to pick up the whatevers, if he did that consistently, he shouldn’t have been in any danger at all. He would have had to walk directly on to the leaves to fall in and if he had he would have fallen in feet rather than head-first as depicted.
To be further pedantic, those are more likely cheese puffs, not peanuts. They look like cheese puffs, and Moondog is unlikely to eat peanuts with the shells on. The cheese puffs might have a little dirt on them, but Moondog is not one to be concerned with rules of any number of seconds. Being cheese puffs, they are more irresistible than peanuts, and Moondog speculated that there might be a much larger supply down the hole. He knew the hole was there, but he tried reaching too far for the cheese puffs and fell for the trap.
One of my fave Fleshy episodes was where Monty tried to teach him some pedestrian tricks like rolling over and fetching (dumb dog tricks). Fleshy just stared at Monty, Monty got mad and gave up, saying, “Oh, just go on and do whatever you want. You’re hopeless.” Then (while no one’s looking, of course), Fleshy rummages around in the garage, and emerges, simultaneously riding a unicycle and juggling.

There are many pitfalls associated with eating peanuts

Anyone can catch a Moondog; squirrels are tough.

A good gag made great by the way that his hat and glasses hang in the air after his fall.

Fleshy has the makings of a first-class big-game hunter. Unfortunately, he’s going after small game!

I like Fleshy glaring down into the trap that he has to set again after Moondog fell in. Dumb humans…

If at first you don’t succeed, dig a hole and see if that will work. Maybe it will bring the squirrels out to laugh at Moondog.
