I’m not so sure about this, Jef… I’ve been spending a lot of time on the bike path this summer, and I see an awful lot of women carefully running side-by-side, as if each is deliberately avoiding being faster than the other. Figured it’s a “sisterhood” thing—“we are equals, so we both run exactly the same speed, side by side.” It gets to be a problem when I come up behind them on the bike and ring the bell, as they can’t figure out how to make room for me to pass without one being (even for a moment) ahead of the other. Somehow, when I come up behind guys running together, they don’t have this problem—one just speeds up and gets in front of the other to let me pass. Of course, sometimes they get in a race…

Even if they’re running side by side, one of them is having to moderate her pace to not get ahead of the other. And both of them know which one that is.
