Dolphin teeth have been used as currency in the Solomon Islands for centuries! Captain Kidd (1645-1701) one of history's most infamous pirates was not really a pirate but a privateer working for the British government. The last ever Quagga- a type of zebra with stripes only on its head and neck- died in Amsterdam in 1883.

A privateer is still a pirate, they just have a get-out-of-jail-free card from their government and have to pay them a certain percentage of what they pillage in return.
