Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for June 20, 2013
Transcript:
Marigold: I shall cast a spell to amplify their conversation! Dad: ...and without Phoebe here, we won't go through as much cereal! Marigold: It can only mean one thing! Phoebe: What? Marigold: Your parents mean to send you into exile for your excessive cereal consumption! Phoebe: Then we should start playing "law firm" instead of "detective agency."

Gasp! They’re putting her up for adoption!

Phoebe as a Lawyer ? OBJECTION!! epic music *Point finger dramatically * I think any one who said “Summer camp” may have been right unless they mean “grandma’s house” or"Spend a week with Marigold in unicorn world" or “Trip to Disney land”

It’s also possible they’re marrying her off to a dragon, for political reasons.

One of the things I love about this strip (other than the precocious young lady, of course) is that the mundane life and the life of parents is so subtly, but so finely portrayed. I don’t comment often, but I do think this on a regular basis.

I’m sticking with the summer camp hypothesis. Marigold paddling a canoe is an image too cute to pass up. She also has the perfect skewer for roasting marshmallows.

Summer camp or off to see grandparents.

But you’ll have to mow the lawn more often without Marigold there eating it all summer!

Speculations about when Phoebe goes off for college?

I agree, summer camp. If Dakota is there as well, they could put on another play.

Ya gotta give one thing to Phoebe, though. She was dead right in her suspicions that her folks were up to something.

Be careful Phoebe.

We could all be leaping to conclusions here. I noticed that both her parents are looking out the window at Phoebe and Marigold in the first panel. And from what I’ve seen of them so far, Dad wouldn’t be above playing a prank on her if he saw her eavesdropping.

I also notice that the box of cereal looks a lot taller in panel 1 than it does in panel 2. I’m a detective, too! :P

I’m thinking summer camp, too, but I’d LOVE to see a crossover.

Summer Camp… Because forcing her to be around a bunch of kids who treat her like garbage during the school year isn’t enough.

Summer camp’s not THAT bad. being out doors and doing activities is a great experience. the deference is are you going to a typical summer camp? a scout camp? some thing a little more high class? a special camp with some kind of theme? What will the weather be like? whats the camp’s budget? whats the agenda? how wilderness smart are the campers? Camping can be a disaster but it can be lots of fun too. I at least learned a few things from it and if you start small with a back yard tent or an overnight camping trip then one or 2 weeks won’t be so bad. What irks me is people who bring all there electrical gadgets and there RV and get a small hotel room and call it “camping” I have never seen camping done right in the media. The media gets a lot wrong. Scouts, camping, nursing homes, hospitals, ghosts, sharks, history, college, work, school, other races, every time I judge by TV and Movie standard I always find what I am afraid of isn’t as bad as it is in the movies, or what I want to try isn’t as fun or easy as in the movies.

Summer camp is certainly what crossed my mind. I don’t think they have summer camps where Marigold lives—no industrial society for them to react against. They might have summer grounds, of course, but Phoebe can’t eat grass.

@ Night-Gaunt49: As a veteran of several Summer’s worth of camp experience, I think that I should say that not all Summer camps are bad. It depends a lot on a) what kind of counselors the camp has and how well trained they are, b) what kind of activities you get to do, c) how good (or bad) the food is, and d) what your fellow campers are like. (One of my camps hosted a group of budding juvenile delinquents for a couple of weeks in order to try to show them that they didn’t have to embrace that particular lifestyle. HUGE mistake! Things only got better once they left.)

It sounds to summer camp.
