Jack: Go long for a pass. Mondo: There's a fence in the way. Jack: Break toward the street before you get to the fence. Mondo: So, I can crash into the fence, or run out into the traffic. This is why always want to be quarterback.
I was going to say, “Hey, Jack got his cast off!” except… A kid who looks a lot like Jack Dooley is playing football – without a cast – on Oct. 19. (Jack broke his arm on Oct.13). At any rate, Jack appears fully healed and castless by Oct. 26. It’s a medical miracle! (Another reason to love the comics).
Considering the way kids age in comic strips (and panels), I figure it would take about 20 years for Jack’s arm to heal. Rather than take him out of athletics indefinitely, I took cartoonist’s license and healed the boy.
Speaking of Mondo, quick story: I once did a Sunday strip where Mondo fantasized he was Zorro. He did this while killing time on a pommel horse as he waited for his sister to finish her gymnastics class. His mother, at one point, said, “Armando! Get down from there.” Zorro fans went nuts. Apparently, Guy Williams, who played Zorro in the 1950’s TV series, was actually named Armand Castalano. The fans thought it was an insider reference.
Maybe when Jack went back for a checkup, a better doctor realized it was never broken, and took the cast off. The first one saw a hair and thought it was a hairline fracture.
I still want to cut my initial into a bad dude’s shirt. Is that wrong?

Maybe he got patched up at a VA hospital and they used some superglue for the reason it was developed.

“The strip is just fantastic, that’s really where it’s at..oh, by the way, which one’s Jack?” (seriously, I’m a newcomer)

Jack is the kid with orange hair. The other kid is Mondo.
