Hence, the birth of the ‘child-leash’. Which I think was one of the best inventions ever. Small kids will ramble away from a frazzled parent. And there are freaks out there just waiting for that one moment when the parent’s back is turned.
Years ago, when there was still Marshall Field’s in Chicago and my son was very young — six-ish — we were downtown having a lunch-with-Dad day. In the morning we walked over to Fields on State St. We went out the revolving door onto State, my son in front, and when I got out her was nowhere to be seen. The minute that followed was a full-blown horror movie unreeling in my head, watching all the people go by and no son. When I finally did a 360, there he was, hiding next to the door against the wall. NOT my favorite memory of his childhood!
Another reason I am glad I am not a parent. Growing up, if we wandered from my parents, we would have needed a picture, so the surgeon would know what we were supposed to look like when he put us back together.

So much for her missing her brother and going off to look for him! Now…think like a kid and go find her.
