It actually comes from the name “AsSOCiation Football” a little over 100 years ago. The first players were warriors, who used decapitated heads.

..as opposed to “rugger” - which is why the name had to be coined; the Brits needing to distinguish between their two different types of footie.

So that soccer players, who sneer at US Ffootball players as wimps, wouldn’t be truly humiliated by accidentally trying to play Rugby football.

“It takes leather balls to play rugby”

I’ve actually done a strip with the kicking-heads-around origin theory. I’ve had at least three strips that had images of decapitated heads. And my cartoonist friends make fun of me because they think Cleats is not edgy enough. Hah.

In Australia, they play Aussie football, Association football, and not one but TWO different types of Rugby football. (1)

    (1) I forget what they’re called, but the Aussies consider them separate sports. The differences in the rules are greater than the differences between AL baseball and NL baseball, but they appear nearly identical to an outsider (that is, to ME). They don’t compete against each other.
