Earl, by ‘off white’. do you mean ivory, pearly white, white heat, albumen white, vanilla, winter, glacier, marshmallow, eggshell, snowy, meringue, wool, milk, uniform, flour, white wine, or wind sail white?
I love that idea. All our walls are, well not really off-white, but white with hints of pink and yellow, just enough that it’s not WHITE. Having plain walls means no limits on what you put on the floor or what pictures you hang. It’s lovely.
I chose palest vanilla for our entire apartment when we painted the last time (several years ago). Under artificial light it is warm and inviting. However, when I needed to repaint one wall to cover some marks, I went back and got the same brand, same colour, same everything…in the tin, it was the pale vanilla colour. What dripped on my clothes and the floor was also pale vanilla. On the wall, it morphed into bright lemon yellow.
My X never ate any other Ice Cream except vanilla, but, he would doctor it up with chocolate sauce, or strawberries, or Carmel………why not just eat a different flavor. =)
I have painted walls many times over the years and have tried many colors. If the color looks good enough to eat, it’s not for me! Dark colors are right out! Wall colors should provide a calming background, not a distraction. .This is The Word: Flat-finish white on the ceiling, any light pastel (but not pink) semi-gloss on the wall. Easy to paint without noticeable gaps, easy to edge at the ceiling and floor moldings. That’s it. Anything else, I’m not listening … covering my ears (la la la la la …)..Stick to your principles, Earl.
I agree with Alton Brown that vanilla is one of the most exotic and spectacular flavors on the planet, and how it came to be synonymous with ‘plain’ and ‘boring’ is a baffling mystery.
My wife and I are still laughing about the whole paint-the-bedroom story line. It reflects us almost exactly, except that I don’t expect to be dead in five years (but I still won’t care whether the room gets painted).
Wished somebody had told the idiot who tiled the bathroom in my apartment that WHITE IS BASIC ! BlackFrostWarrior, I’m with you! My bathroom is bronze/mauve/rose/and some kind of brown. Who thinks like this? Mango in the bedroom? Keep it soft is all I can say, and accent with deeper shades so it won’t be too “girlish” for Earl.

I’m voting for a 60’s motiff(sp?). Something in dayglow that looks like tie-dye. Then light it with blacklights and viola~

Perhaps some retro flock wallpaper or Victorian tiles like those found in old public toilets. Maybe even Norwegian wood.

Once the lights are off, it makes no real difference what color a bedroom is. Anyone who says a wall color keeps them awake is certifiably insane.
