…my mother used to read old grimm fairy tales to us, and end with “and here comes a candle to light you to bed, and here comes a chopper to chop off your head.” Then she’d say goodnight, and turn off the lights and close the door. We’d have the covers over our heads all night, afraid to come out….good times, good times… :)
He’s been singing it for over 70 years, like the other songs of his they used in that movie. (Including “Man of Constant Sorrow” — although that song he didn’t write…. he and his brother were just the first to release it on a record.) He just did a new version of it for the soundtrack.
