GUEST CARTOONIST for today’s “Frog Applause”: Mitra Farmand
–
Mitra lives in Somerville, Mass. By day, she’s a data analyst and by night she’s an aspiring cartoonist. She invites you to stalk her on her Flickr page and her somewhat neglected blog.
A friend of mine has a cat that recently had a bout of congestive heart failure for some unknown reason.
The local vet referred friend and kitty to a veterinary practice in northern New Jersey. SEVENTY vets on staff and a linear accelerator for the oncology department!!
(Kitty seems OK now, thank you very much, but will probably be on diuretics the rest of her little kitty life. Good luck to Mitra and doggy.)
Ok, I’ll be the bad guy. Why does the dog’s bandage keep changing paws? Not complaining, just wondering. It’s a cute comic, reminds me of old Lenny from “The Big Picture”.
Good eye, Dypak. Mitra’s small arto takes away nothing from her cartoon though. If anything, it makes her work more interesting. Count me as a fan, Mitra.
Captivating, Mitra.
Ailing animals and small children touch our hearts especially, because they don’t understand what’s happening to them and we can’t explain it. I bet being carried to the park means a lot to her.
Had a shepherd mix that had to wear the cone because he wouldn’t quit licking the injection site. Vet gave us a bad-tasting ointment but it didn’t work - who can say what tastes bad to an animal that will eat roadkill. Also, I think he enjoyed that his barks sounded much louder with the cone on.
The third drawing, in which you are carrying her, is one of the most beautiful cartoon drawings I have ever seen. The dog has an air of resignation. The girl’s face is largely obscured; we, the readers, have to do the work of connecting with her emotional state. There’s also something vaguely odd about how high the dog is held. Most people would hold a dog that size about waist height for optimum balance. The fact that the dog is being held right up near her face suggests … extraordinary closeness? … a stolen kiss in the dog’s fur? … an urge to turn a trying moment into a triumph, trophy aloft? It’s a wonderfully composed image.
All the best.
plight/Harlequin the Hep-Hep-Hepcat - I hold her just like that. It’s the only time she lets me really hug her so I take advantage. Here’s what it looks like in real life:

Thanks so much guys! And thanks Teresa for letting me guest cartoon!
Irope - My dog’s back to her old self except for one thing - she can’t stop licking her paw. So she she’s still wearing the dreaded cone.
Dypak - I realized I had messed that up after I was done. Oops.
