many school districts are now doing year round school. or, at the least of 4 weeks of summer break. because, summer brain drain, test scores, protect kids, etc…
I’d have liked school more, if I could have started college instead of high-school, which was a waste of my time. Nevertheless, my wife and I encouraged our children to appreciate every opportunity to learn, whatever the circumstance. As a whole, the American public is abysmally stupid and uninformed, primarily because people don’t acquire a reverence for learning, when they’re young.
I always enjoyed school. Sure, some of the assignments were difficult (mainly in high school and college), a couple of the courses seemed pointless, some of my classmates were troublemakers or whining jerks, and a couple of the teachers were mean. But you get that outside of school, too.
But overall, it was fun, many more pluses than minuses. My son and his classmates all like school, too, as did most of the successful people I know.
I find it sad that so many people still claim school is/was useless, that they hated it, that they either were born knowing everything, or that they learned all they needed outside of school, and so on.
But hating school does make a base for a (tired) joke for a comic strip.
Again with the latecomers! My county went back last Monday; my grandkids’ county the Thursday before that. Where are these slackers who are still waiting till after Labor Day to start the school year?
As I stated earlier, several years ago the Wisconsin legislature passed a law that schools could not start till Sept. 1 or later so that students could work in resorts and other recreational areas and the schoolkids’ families could squeeze in all the vacation time possible, thus bringing more $$ into the Wisconsin coffers.
Here where I live, the school board opted for a longer school year .BUT Mother Nature wasn’t happy with that. Temps at or above 100 have forced them to let the kids out early every day (decent almost new heating system but no air conditioning) As the old commercial goes “Don’t try to fool Mother Nature!”

School is never over, and you keep applying the same learning skills you had when it was formal.
