People say they like summertime more than winter, but when summer comes they stay indoors in air conditioning that makes me have wear a flannel shirt in a restaurant even on 95 degree day

If they enjoy warm weather so much, why do they hide from it….

The autumnal equinox is on September 20-something, but there’s actually no rule that says that the seasons change exactly on the solstices and equinoces. In some parts of the world, like the British Isles, the solstices and equinoces are considered to be the middle of the seasons (thus, for instance, the summer solstice is “midsummer”), by which standard summer has been over for nearly a month. Or you can define the change of seasons by holidays, such as Labor Day, or by human-made events, like the start of school, or by natural landmarks, like when the trees start changing color. All are equally valid.

I tolerate the summer heat only because of the wonderful growing season, but fall is my absolute favorite. LOVE that feeling of the change in the air!

sonorhC: That is because of the thermal lag. One does not feel the extremes until well into the season because the earth temperature is lagging behind the astronomical season. This is mainly a problem in passive solar systems such a roof overhangs which shade the windows in the summer but let the sun in to warm in the winter – it is still hot in the fall, but the warming sunlight is coming in because of the lower angle of the sun, and in the spring, you lose the solar heat while mornings are still chilly. The roll-up awnings of the early 20th century had their uses.

Here in Tucson, “Summer” ended August 1, the first day of school. Never mind it’s still 100 degrees out, which often lasts into October.
