    labor day is, for the most part, an american holiday … unfortunately most of our goods come from countries that have few if any holidays

    I see greedy unions. I see significantly more greedy executives! Honestly my CEO is so greedy, he is all the way to evil.

    Of course, these days, fewer and fewer people actually work in mills and foundries and assembly lines, and even fewer of those are in the United States, and even fewer still are in unions. Look at the stats since WWII and all you see is downhill.

    Actually, Labor Day is celebrated in most countries on May 1st. And in most countries, unlike the USA. paid time off (holidays and vacations) is mandated by law, whereas in the USA they are merely “usual and customary”, which means they are optional and it’s completely up to employers to provide them at their discretion.

    Labor Day is an odd celebration with all the people who have lost jobs and have yet to get meaningful full time jobs back or any job at all. Remember it takes 225,000 – ,250,000 new jobs per month to break even and cover graduations and immigration. Thus when the media celebrates 187,000 new jobs, we are not yet breaking even, much let regaining all those since 2007 who have lost jobs.

    In the rest of the world, labor day is May 1st, which ironically commemorates the Haymarket massacre at a union rally in Chicago.

    Yes a state store worker, who provides the worst retail service in America and whose wages are supported by overpriced booze and lousy customer service. Can’t wait for the legislators to finally get the gumbas to stand up to that worthless union and privatize the system like it should be.

    on"the history of comics" there were at least 2 references to the working poor of yesteryear. 2 nigh cleaning ladies were standing outside the mayors office “is a fine city but they don’t don’t know how much it owes to us” and then a guy says I’m the janitor. If I quit they would have to burn the thing down in a week". having said that, I hope I didn’t infringe on copy-writes. I didn’t think of that. hope I didn’t just do something bad.??

    Our country now runs on blue collar labor 24/7.

    Labor Day is now a holiday where only management and white collar workers get the day off.

    When you are illegal and can’t speak English, no wonder you don’t know about holidays.

    @AshburnStadium

    Husband had to join the union at work. What a rip off. They did nothing. Their big thing one year was they were going to get everyone a parking space with their name on it. The agency had excess parking spaces so it was unneeded and they worked with children with emotional problems – who wants the children to know which car is whose? Husband became exec director and had to deal with the union. He would say that they could give them X, union would say that they could not give that much to the staff. One year they had a grant for salary for staff, union told them they could not give the staff they money as it was not in the contract. Entire staff would get same raise and benefits as union so it was to his advantage to get union members more. Eventually the non union staff (office and directors) were getting higher raises than union as union would refuse the raises. Oh, union did get a pay phone installed for use of members. Union did not put members into a union pension or medical plan, they were established by the agency and union thought they gave too much.

    I did accounting for a carpenter-joiner local for a while. The secretary who rain the local and the officers were paid more than the workers.

    Unions just suck members’ salaries up.
