    Hashtags….another way to drive English teachers crazy. Random number signs, in addition to spelling and grammar going down the drain. The pain……

    In the olden days, we mainframe and mini computer people used to call that symbol the “crunch” symbol (#). We also had the “splat” symbol (*), the “hat” symbol (^) and later the “ka-ching” symbol ($).
