I wonder whether we’ll see a lot of these WWI flying ace strips on gocomics.com as the world commemorates the centennial of the start of WWI (1914-2014).
True. If you really want to go back to determine the root, you have to go back to at least the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The Habsburg Dynasty, which had owned and ruled 3/4 of Europe for centuries, overreached in trying to eliminate all of Napoleon’s reforms in France and other parts of the Empire following Napoleon’s defeat by enacting such draconian laws that it led to the various revolutions that galvanized France, Italy, and Germany into independent, monarch-free states in the mid-19th Century and eventually led to both the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand in 1914 and the Bolshevik revolution in Russia in 1917. The Treaty of Versailles was nothing compared to the Congress of Vienna, even though the former was an indirect result of the latter.
Up to mighty London came an Irishman one day,As the streets were paved with gold, sure ev’ry one was gay,Singing songs of Piccadilly, Strand and Leicester Square,Till Paddy got excited, then he shouted to them there:
It’s a long way to Tipperary,It’s a long way to go,It’s a long way to Tipperary,To the sweetest girl I know!Goodbye Piccadilly! Farewell Leicester Square! It’s a long, long way to Tipperary,But my heart’s right there!
It’s a shame Americans don’t sit and sing together. Go anywhere else in the world and sit and have a drink with them. They’ll all know all kinds of old songs to sing and won’t be afraid to sing them. You try it here in the States and people think you’re crazy. And sorry, karaoke doesn’t count. Pop songs just aren’t the same. Singing along with the machine isn’t the same.

I wonder if he would’ve used his “vehicle”, if it didn’t burn down, to get through that?

Plewds aren’t perspiration. They’re cartoon shorthand for great effort or anxiety. Mort Walker explained it quite clearly.
