Mrs. Olsen: I'll be getting my cast off tomorrow, so Mr. Uhrmann will be substituting. Children: YAAAAAY! Miss Plainwell: How much of that was about your cast and how much was about you being gone? Mrs. Olsen: The cheering in my head was about equal parts.

When was the last time Mr. Uhrmann substituted? He’s the one who gives Caufield a challenge, right? He’s great.

Jef, did you see that Eppie Johnson just died? He was the founder of the world’s first traithlon, “Eppie’s Great Race,” here in Sacramento. See the story in today’s Sacramento Bee. sacbee.com

What exactly is Caulfield doing?

@bigpuma “I’m a little surprised by Plainwell’s failure to use the possessive pronoun immediately before a gerund.”

I think “you” is the object of the preposition “about,” and “being gone” is an adjectival phrase modifying “you.” If I’d been the speaker, I’d have put a little extra verbal emphasis on “you” to highlight the contrast between “your cast” and “you.” How much was about your cast, and how much was about you. (Drat. No can do italics, despite having been told how multitudinous times. Must write down instructions next time. But where?!)

After the cast comes off, she’ll need to spend a couple of hours setting up the PT appointments. Maybe the first one right after the doctor and get some exercises. She’s going to be sore and tired afterwards.

Ooh, does this mean we get a Mr. Uhrmann strip tomorrow? As a part-time sub myself, I admit the Uhrmanator is my hero…
hippogriff over 11 years ago
bigpuma: Hardly, but I do notice things. Lighten up, it is one of those comic strips that is primarily comedy – not that the medium can’t carry powerful messages.
