It’s been a long time, even in England, when beer, ale, porter, or stout came in kegs.I’m old enough to remember them and the old ’ bung stoppers ‘. That’s when " tapping a keg " really meant it.If the three mousketeers want to ‘modernize’ Andy & Chalkie, then they’d best start with metal barrels !
You’re correct that cask ale or ‘real ale’ is unpasteurized and not injected with CO2 . I have friends who have micro breweries in the U.S., Canada, and England , similar to Ruddels and Abbot. My point is that for hygienic reasons and economic ones, wooden barrels ( kegs, casks ) are no longer used by brewers. Fresh beer ( naturally fermented ) has a better shelf life in aluminum kegs and less chance of picking up unwanted bacteria,The illustrators anachronism spoiled ( like the beer ) what joke there was.
@Great Gweedo’s Ghost…..Those rabbits look very young. I’ve never kept rabbits but wonder if they are old enough to eat solid food. The tomato appears to have been sniffed at but not bitten….have they actually been biting at it? Hope they survive….I’d be happy to have a garden full of “wild” creatures, instead of plants. There are foxes near us, also owls and sometimes bats and of course, grey squirrels.
Gweedo, I didn’t go back and read yesterday’s comments, but I gather you found a nest of baby bunnies? I guess you know to watch out for those foxes. Where’s mama bunny? They make their nests in strange places sometimes, I know that from past experience. :-)
Went back and read yesterday’s posts. Number Six, so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I lost mine on Sept. 11, 2009. That is what September 11 means to me now.
I just received a reply to an email I sent to BCA, and I though you lot might be interested:
My email – Do you have any plans to digitize and post the remainder of the Andy Capp cartoons in your archives? If you check the comments section of Andy on the GoComics web site, you will see that there is a strong interest in the classic strips. Is there anything we fans can do to make this happen?
Reply from Dr. Nicholas Hiley, Head of Special Collections and Curator of the British Cartoon Archive – _Thanks for your email.
The Andy Capp collection is being digitised piecemeal, as we have the time and opportunity between other projects. This isn’t because we don’t value the collection, but rather because we have limited resources for digitisation and cataloguing.
I am very pleased that there is interest in this collection – I am sure that there will also be fans of our large holding of “Perishers” material as well. I will remind the Librarian that there are many fans waiting for such material to be added, and see if we can move Andy Capp up the list of projects.
Am I the only one who actually liked today’s strip? It gave me a laugh, in fact. Although Mikeyj’s redo was also quite good. I personally think the “anachronism” of the old wooden barrels added to, not detracted from, the humor. Oh, well, as Mark Twain reminds us, “It is difference of opinion that makes horse races.”

I’m sorry too !Went out several times early on and didn’t see anyone. About 10 AM I went out and as I was walking around the front of the house I saw a gray cat hastily moving off the property…… Pretty much explains what happened. Fun while it lasted !-If you are at a WiFi spot that doesn’t have outlets then your time is up when 10 minutes becomes auto shut down. The closest Wegmans supermarket to Dad’s house doesn’t have plug-ins and when “I died”, that was it. I suspect the house will be sold next time I am in Buffalo and so it will be a different ballgame. -Well, Heather is a new-to-me neighbor. She owned a house within sight of here and apparently seemed to be living in it by herself. I don’t know if she was married, had kids or what. I met her once, briefly, when I used to walk for exercise. My current fitness regime is more beneficial than walking. She drives a late model VW van. She hails from southwestern Michigan. Joe will soon order the last two windows for that apartment. He said that the delivery date for the others has been changed to Sept. 19. Our past orders pretty much came before the projected delivery date. Joe is unhappy about the rabbits too. Wanee, his late wife, was in Audubon. They believe in preservation of wildlife and wildlife habitat.
I agree with Joe and his wife. As would some others.Awwww! I loved the bunny photos. They’re so sweet. I just want to reach into the computer screen and pick one up. I think your ‘Canon’ camera takes very good quality photos. Is that the one you’re going to ‘replace’ for a new one?-Who is after the house? Or do you not know yet? I hope whoever gets it keeps it tidy. That’s what my Mum would say. It looks like I’m starting to say it now.-I think it will be worth the wait when you eventually get the windows. September 19th is a quite a while away. Oh well.Happy Monday to you!
Yesterday I asked for information on Number 6. I had quit reading go comics for a few weeks and missed out that something had happened to him. Did see the post about his father and commented on that yesterday. Someone please answer!!!!!!!!!
We solved the frog problem in the pond, bought a chlorine dispensing plastic duck. Now we can sleep with the windows open. And our resident bunny skirts the yard thru the flowerbeds, safer there from the Coopers Hawks overhead. We throw green scraps (carrot tops, lettuce cores etc, )behind the garden for him,

But is the beer in wooden barrels ? If it is, the kegs are worth more than the beer.
Chalkeye about 11 years ago
Places that self top-end Ales might use Nitrogen Gas in those pressure Tubes. Like Hollingshead Deli in Orange.

CSI New York was my favorite show! I hated when it was cancelled. And before that they cancelled CSI Miami, my other favorite.

Why is the song “Beer Barrel Polka” by The Andrews Sisters running through my head right now after reading this strip?
Just because I’m a teenager doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate very old music. I like it better than today’s ‘music’
Beer Barrel Polka
I agree with most others here… This strip isn’t very funny at all.xxx
