I get the part about the quote marks, but I don’t get the joke. What does “getting one’s bell rung” mean, with and without quote marks?

According to my extensive one-minute Internet search, “getting your bell rung” means getting hit very hard on the head, and maybe getting a concussion. What is it that is none of Caulfield’s business?

Maybe it’s a different type of bell in the second frame.

Coach probably thought the second reference was to having sex.

That’s what I took it to mean, quotation marks or not. When I was in phys-ed class in junior high, I took a blow to the “bell”, and as I was on the ground grabbing my crotch, the teacher came over to see if I was ok, and said “that’s what they call having your bell rung”. I’ve never known it to mean a blow to the head.

Punctuation is a VERY important differentiator – It can mean the difference between:

We’re going to eat, Uncle Fred andWe’re going to eat Uncle Fred.

As a fighter, having your bell rung was a hard hit to the head that dazed you. I’ve never heard it about getting hit in the “cup”.

We always called getting hit in the cup a “cup check”.

Don’t you know that guys can turn anything into sexual innuendo simply by putting quotation marks around it … if you “know what I mean”
