It is important to draw a sharp line under the fact that this was slavery, not just another trade product. However – and since my son’s school is in the middle of studying this right now, I can actually check his textbook – they are emphasizing the interconnectedness of slaving with more “respectable” businesses, and the triangular nature of the trade is important to understand. I suspect businesses would find a way to return to slavery if it became profitable enough.

They have; actually people have never stopped. There’s the sex trade, of course, but servitude also — and even in the US. It’s just not as open and prevalent as it was during the 1700-1800’s. And, of course, no one seems to give a damn about it.

There is a problem when treating history using modern moral concepts. That treatment automatically demonizes those ancient peoples. It would be more useful to concentrate on raising children who have a strong moral code that doesn’t tolerate preying on their fellow citizens.

I’d like to know where you live Lalo, cuz if you’re concerned about Texans hating Hispanics, you don’t know Texas or Texans.That doesn’t mean we like letting in illegals; that’s called rule-of-law.And the idea of using what people said decades ago is simply stupid.Other than that, most of your strips are pretty good.

PS: Have you seen the Ads for Viking river cruises? Considering the violence of the originals, why isn’t there outrage about the modern advertising?

Judging them by today’s codes, there were never any legal Vikings. Which is sort of what I was getting at.
