The return of Halley’s Comet in 1986 was its most disappointing showing of the past two thousand years or so. The comet arrived in February 1986 and it was on the opposite side of the sun from where the earth was at the time, so nobody could see it. By April it should have been reasonably bright but was not easily visible from the northern hemisphere.
