Last time I had that much trouble untangling Christmas lights, I cut the wire on both sides of the tangle, threw the tangle into the fire, and spliced the rest of it back together.
Sure, I shortened a 50 foot string of lights down to only 8 feet, but it looked a whole lot better hanging over the garage door.
I’m lucky. Our house is so far back, you can’t see it from the street. It makes no sense to decorate it on the outside. In fact, when we go visit the grandkids for Christmas we barely decorate the inside.
Nothing quite captures the spirit of Christmas like 4.5 megawatts of lights on the house. If you don’t bog down the generators or kick the grid off line, you haven’t decorated enough.
The bulbs in the strip look like the old C7 type lights. They are 120 volts each. The C7 type light strings can be cut and spliced with out any problem. I am not sure if you can still get the C7 type light strings. They still sell the bulbs but I have not see a sting set of them in years.

It looks like an insect wrapped in a spider web. (The man in “Crumb” a few days ago can relate.)

I thought he was going to say something like, “Jason had some trouble helping with the lights.”

Now I’m expecting something to burst out of the cocoon.

Maybe it’s an Indian burial cocoon?

…and in the springtime, the magnificent lite-brite butterfly will emerge from it’s cocoon and spread it’s majestic wings!
