The main detail I got wrong in my off-the-cuff answer is that this story is not actually in the Iliad, but in other works (mainly, the Aeneid).
msowards: There were cyclops other than Polyphemus, just as there were other gorgons besides Medusa, and even named Valkuries in addition to Brunhilde.
