Ok – this is a totally uneducated guess – please don’t beat me up too badly. I can almost see Wally dropping the grenade down the hole and the resultant explosion rocketing the elevator up the shaft.
Let’s see. My guess is these “elevators” work on compressed air. Increasing the pressure under the pod pushes it upward and expands a telescoping shaft. Releasing the pressure lowers the pod and collapses the shaft. Wally cut a hole in the floor and the pressure in the pod went up slightly (Holly’s ears popped). If Wally dropped that grenade through the hole, they are probably high enough that it would explode before reaching the bottom. The resulting overpressure might propel them the rest of the way to the surface (if they are relatively close). Intriguing possibilities abound… ;-)
Now Wally’s gonna figure out how to get them to the surface with only a blaster, a hand grenade, and whatever components are in the elevator. Before he mutated, wasn’t he MacGyver?
before I read all the comments who know Way more than I do, my 1st thought that he would have to drop the grenade down the hole and it would explode when it hit the elevator door.thinking that it would explode without the pin being pulled. Because of the way Wally’s tail reacted. It’s nice to learn more about how things work!
Found a use for his grenade. Now it depends on if hydraulic keep it from going up as pressure in the hydraulic tubes going up must go somewhere to be relieved. Now if there is no hydraulic fluid in the tubes going up. (IE the tube is raised by pressure from below.) then the resistance would be very low except for friction drag. Wally will have to plug that hole in the floor or the pressure in the pod could kill them. I imagine it will reach a few atmospheres in that pod before it is all over.Their ears popping already showed the pressure in the pod is equalized. Just the blast pressure is going to be really high till the tube reaches terminal velocity. Of course does the cap at the top hold them in?? Like the caps on the old nuke underground launch sites. If they do break through the damage will be large and if that satellite is up there very visible. It will attract maybe unwanted attention unless it is dittoed.Monday will tell.Tune in for Cat and Mouse over the Moon or “I CAN SEE MY HOUSE FROM HEEEERRRRREEEEE.”Brought to you by APEX…….“We are better than ACME. Maybe we’ve all forgotten rapid changes in acceleration. Depending on how far they need to go, and how far they’re already up, dropping an explosive in an air tight chamber with a single path of travel sounds a LOT like a bullet to me. Dunno bout you, but that would suck to ride a bullet that is not only accelerating suddenly and rapidly, but accelerating against the force of gravity.
If Wally drops a grenade, he’ll have to do two things: quickly close the hole in the elevator floor, and be prepared to explain one day to Professor Mallard why he started his mission by destroying one of the shafts.
Just as Wally drops the grenade, the rats return from lunch and figure that they’ll check on the bodies. They turn on the elevator to bring it back down at full speed. So, when the grenade explodes, the dropping elevator creates a smaller blast chamber and the elevator doors get blown out, with the flying metal killing the rats. Then, with the doors gone, the elevator freefalls to the bottom of the shaft.
This is the scenario I’d like to see: If the ceiling of the elevator has a maintenance hatch, have Holly go up and sit on the roof. Wally carefully cuts the bottom out of the elevator, making sure to not let it or himself fall. Then, assuming that there’s a maintenance ladder along the shaft wall (which Holly could verify), Wally uses that to descend about 40 feet, then uses the raygun to tack-weld the elevator floor to the shaft well, making a temporary plug. He climbs back up, and through the hatch in the elevator ceiling. Drop the grenade, seal the hatch, lie down flat on his back, and ride the elevator up like a giant trash can.
What? Late again this morning? I’ve a mind to tell them to—-wait a minute. What’s that? It’s Saturday? There’s no new page till Monday? (Pause.) Never mind.
I’m guessing that Wally is intending to either drop the grenade down the shaft, or dangle it from a thread a fixed distance below the elevator, then set it off by pulling the pin with another thread.
The first would work if the grenade’s fuse is either timed or impact, although in the case of an impact fuse, it wouldn’t detonate until it hit the bottom of the shaft. This would blow a hole in the doors at the bottom, allowing the elevator to drop as the air is released. The speed would depend on the size of the hole, so the fall is potentially survivable.
In the second case, or if the fuse is timed and the grenade explodes before reaching the bottom of the shaft, that would tend to push the elevator upward, but only by a short distance before the rapid expansion of gases ceased. It probably wouldn’t be enough to get the elevator to the surface unless it was almost there already.
On balance, I’d say that Wally intends to try the first method, and will threaten the rats with the zap gun if he arrives alive at the bottom (but that’s a case of “cross that bridge if we come to it”).
Monday is the last day of September, and Tuesday is the first day of October and TopWebComics changes days/months/years at Midnight Pacific Time, or 2AM Central Time. So let us all put in that extra effort to support our favorite comics at TopWebComics. We have been slipping a bit, especially Doc Rat because of the hiatus. Neither Hubris nor Kevin and Kell made it to page one this month, and with a little extra effort we can get them well up on page one. A few months ago we helped get Hubris to around #40 or so, and one of Greg’s biggest fans was absolutely beside himself. This is my latest effort at timesaving, so I’ll see how it works out at the end of the weekend, hopefully. Whoops, there goes another rubber tree plant. Vote ENDTOWN Vote Doc Rat Vote Hubris Vote Kevin and Kell Sincerely, JusSayin
