When you are a small business, it is really disruptive, and I say this as a woman. I once worked for a small company and our Marketing person got pregnant, assuring everyone that she would come back. So we all scrambled to cover for her, taking on new responsibilities in addition to our own. Six weeks became 12 weeks became 6 months, and she finally admitted she wasn’t coming back (I think she was as surprised as anyone, and now, 25 years later, she never went back to work). So we went nearly a year without a full-time marketing person. Eventually the company went under, not solely due to that, but it certainly didn’t help.
I’ve been reprimanded for asking this question, but it makes sense to me: there are so many other comics on GoComics and other sites. Why continue to read one that doesn’t appeal to you? Life is too short to spend time doing something unappealing.
This strip will get better over the years. Saw it until the end. Didn’t start reading it in the early days so these are all new to me. Elizabeth was a little older.
30 years in a dental office allow me to say: They are selfish and paranoid people. And I will add greedy. There is a high suicide rate. Never understood it.
“Maybe some people just like complaining.”True! Schadenfreude and low-rating others is all that keeps some people going. I follow Crankshaft on seattlepi.com/comics-and-games/fun and note that many of the commenters live to run Cranshaft down, along with his creator, Tom Batiuk.
That’s “CranKshaft.” I don’t feel like going through the fol-de-rol of correcting this, esp. since I’m posting so late that few if any people will see it anyhow.
Reminds me of when I was engaged. While we guys were having a bachelor party in one location, my fiancée was gathered with some of our women friends in another location. The spinster in the group asked my bride, “Where are you going on your honeymoon?” “The Outer Banks,” she replied, to which the old lady, in horror and confusion, asked, “What are you going to do there!?” At this, all my bride’s married friends were convulsing terribly trying to stifle their laughter. The spinster looked around the room, confused; then she finally figured out why they were gagging and she blurted out, “I mean besides that!!”
Same thing you were doing when you had your 2 kids. Such a sweet sensitive guy is John — what, no “Congratulations”? I don’t think Lynn really had to do to much to "make [him] look bad, he’s doing a pretty good job of that himself.
Give him a break. I’m not saying he isn’t self-centered, but he was just caught completely flat footed, and it isn’t unreasonable that his first concern is for his business (which is a, if not the, major part of his world). I’m sure he will regret his demeanor in the last panel, which I read as exaggerated for the readers benefit.
For myself, I probably would have had those thoughts, but would have had the presence of mind to censor/edit myself.

Isn’t personal information not allowed to be discussed in the work place (unless it’s really a pregnancy)?

Somehow, I have a feeling that John is going to make this all about him.

It’s a comic strip. Get over it.

Oh Jean, you’re totally screwing up John’s day! ;-)
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
I pick option (a). I think the last frame would have been lots funnier if John had been saying “What were you thinking?!”

I guess it means she will have to take leave for some time. He will be lost without her. True, but a bit selfish. No congratulations?
