When’s the Moon People gonna show up again? And do you think Mysta Chimera will eventually grow real Lunarian horns and gain real Lunarian powers eventually?
TCM runs a patch work version made out of stills once an awhile. “London after Midnight” is perhaps the holy grail of lost films. The closest you can come to seeing it is to watch “Mark of the Vampire” (1935) which was a remake by the same director Tod Browning, starring Bela Lugosi.
From wikipedia.org/wiki/London_After_Midnight_%28film%29):
The last known copy was destroyed in the 1967 MGM Vault fire. In 2002, Turner Classic Movies aired a reconstructed version using the original script and film stills.
Apparently in Tracyville, there was one other that secretly survived. Seems it lasted longer than it’s last owner. (Also, nice MST reference, TheDOCTOR.)
Okay, we get it, Abner; the guy who owned the last copy of “London after Midnight” became one of the 30-odd notches on the hilt of your sword-cane. Pass the popcorn, Rikki. We’re building up to something here.
From the comments section on London After Midnight at the IMDb website…..“….i read at some website that a copy of london after midnight was found at some farm house (no folling), the farmer showed the film to the studio and they said they will release it on vhs and dvd, but it will be delayed until 2022, because the film is damaged a little bit, because the it was under a chicken’s nest for god knows how long….” The Wheatons have a copy? Or just coincidence? Hmmmm….
The main character in the movie is obviously Abner’s idol because Abner looks and dresses exactly like him. The movie was based on a short story called The Hypnotist and I wonder if something like that might be coming up, though I don’t see anything about hypnotism mentioned in the plot synopsis. I also noticed this interesting criminal connection mentioned in the Wikipedia article about the film:
The film was used as a part of the defense for a man accused of murdering a woman in Hyde Park, London in 1928. He claimed Chaney’s performance drove him temporarily insane, but his plea was rejected and he was convicted of the crime.
I suppose this is supposed to be character development for a character that has no character..There are those who have said Doubleup Doubleup is just a thug just a thug. In comparison, he’s a nice guy nice guy..Hat’s off to yesterday’s post who noted that, with the top hats and derbies, the Batmobile can’t be far behind!.My personal request: The Black Beauty and Bruce Lee!.No, I don’t find this a particularly interesting story. But I’m not going to pine away like some for the return of Franken-Mindy..I’m still bummed that they couldn’t have arranged a comic book death for the real Mysta, very much like Li’l Abner’s escape scene!.Hey, it would have been far more believable!.Last, and certainly least, Comics Kingdom is doing a much better job with colors than Go Comics..But I repeat myself repeat myself…
I keep waiting for the Men In Black to show up at Police HQ to tell them about the Moon People living on Earth. Who knows, maybe some of them are officers of the law patrolling the streets of Tracy’s city.

Apparently, Lon Chaney (The man of 1000 faces) is Abner’s hero… and costume inspiration!

I like the color lots better at Comics Kingdom, except for one thing. Abner is watching a black and white film in color!

Augh, so good! “London After Midnight” really IS a lost Lon Chaney film of the silent era. I love this strip.

I just want to use this strip as an occasion to complain about William Jennings Bryan’s “Cross of Gold” speech. Totally out of line, Bryan!
