My father, who is in the neighborhood of 80, did not actually retire. Instead he just changed careers, while collecting the pension he had from the company he where he had worked for the majority of my childhood and early adult life. Yes, he has slowed down some, but has remained active. I think this is the major reason that both he and my mother are still alive and living in their own home in the country.
Always wondered how SS worked. Here I am, working hard, having SS/Mcd deductions from every paycheck, thinking that when I eventually retire, I should be getting back all the money I worked hard putting in. And all I keep hearing is that by the time I retire (about 25 years or so), there will be NO money left for me to get. How is that? Where is all the money going? Talk about having my head in the clouds. I am learning very quickly you need to either have a ton of money already waiting for you or yo may just have to get another “part-time” job in order to maintain your lifestyle. Doesn’t make retirement seem very appealing at all.
@ChirpYou are correct. Pretty much everything you said is imaginary, and delusional. And most of the rich got that way because their GRANDPARENTS did something impressive. Companies move off-shore because they can get things done with lower wages for workers. Tax laws can be worked around.

He has the right idea, people who have purpose live longer. Retirees should volunteer or travel or something to stay active.

Except everything over $115,000 per year is exempt from the SS tax, so no, he hasn’t earned it.
