Why can’t you get old fashioned hard candy anymore?…..My supermarket has 50 feet of shelves with nothing but chocolate this and chocolate and just Jolly Ranchers and a bag of Lifesavors! I want the old hard candy, And since when are the green pieces apple, rather than lime? It’s hell gettin’ old….Tune in next month to see me complain about white Christmas lights….Give me the big colorful lights….Sigh…..

either this is a retread from 3 years ago or Gene and Mary Lou are separated after a year of marriage. is this going to be the pattern now of re running strips with Gene at the holidays? might as well kill him off and be done with it. same with the story line of them having the boat they bought three years ago. just reduce the strip to a couple of older folks who live for their cat,iPhone and TV.

i feel you but you can find some of the old candy but you have to look for it. you can find some of the “Classics” at Party Stores located near elementary or middle schools. usually kids in high school don’t want to be seen eating the candy they enjoyed a few years earlier. they’re too cool.

Varnes….
The Dollar Tree here has bags and bags of hard candy…most between 6 and 16 oz for a buck.
When I visit my ex mother-in-law I often bring her some: There’s butterscotch, peppermint, Werther’s caramel or caramel apple flavored, or sometimes various Baskin Robbins ice cream flavors…
Out here we have lots of Mexican fruit-flavored candy available too …. dunno about in Michigan….try a Mexican market, if you have those there.
Much more expensive are those cute places in malls, with names like City Sweets.
They’re usually lined with fancy clear bins, and sell every sort of hard candy, but for several dollars a quarter pound.
And if you don’t mind paying even more, and then adding shipping, there are lots of “old-fashioned” or ’retro" candy shops on line, with sour balls in tins and all that stuff

Vermont Country Store on line has LOTS of old fashioned candy. Not the same as shopping in a store, but the candy is really good.

Thanks for the help, guys…..Dr. McCoy, valid point…It actually happened to me once…Before school one day…..Butter Scotch candy….My dad hung me over the toilet with one hand, and slapped my back a couple of times with the other…Popped right out…

Don’t worry Gene – not only will there be candy, but you get to unwrap it, which is the best part.

I remember a time when if the comic was going on vacation they had a week or more worth of strip done in advance. Now you get things like Doonesbury and Get Fuzzy that rerun so often I gave up and removed them from my list of dailies.
