    Linus is the proto-anti-vaxxer.

Kid, if you could only see the future, you’d take the needle without a peep.

When I moved to S. Europe 30 years ago, many mothers refused to vaccinate their kids, though the vaccines are free. The rationale was, “Kids have to get sick, they just catch stuff.” For awhile I worked in a supermarket, and one day I asked a regular customer why her little girl was so droopy. “Oh, she’s got German measles” she said dismissively. Like “no big deal.” I was shocked that the woman would expose other women who might be in the first trimestre of pregnancy to that—she couldn’t imagine what the big deal was.

When I was 6 years old, I had a fever that would not break, but got higher and higher. My parents worried that it was a return of the health issues I had as an infant and rushed me to the hospital. My mother said that she was never so thankful as to see that “first Measle”! (I remember that hospital stay well: my teachers gave me my favorite book, which I STILL have: “Hubert’s Hair-Raising Adventure”. I also got a killer collection of “Big Little Books”.)

You can get shingles more than once and the shingles shot does not guarantee you won’t get shingles. it just means you won’t have a bad case and no one knows how long the shot will be effective. I have had the shingles and it is very painful. I am still getting the shot.

I wonder if medicine will advance to the point where we can get a shot to prevent stupidity.

Didn’t this strip originally say “rubella” instead of rubeola? I remember this strip, and think there was a week or two worth of strips on “rubella”. Rubella is believed to be eradicated from the USA, except for occasional cases brought in from foreign travel and exposure.

As I understand it, I think rubella was German measles and rubeola is what we called red measles or 3 day measles.

I’m inclined to say that I was blessed to have measles, chickenpox, strep throat, and different Influenza as a child(6-10)Boosted my immune system to other related diseases… As an adult haven’t had to worry about missing work because of that..

Watched the Charlie Brown New Year special last night. Charlie Brown just can’t get a break. The cute red haired girl showed up and Charlie Brown was sound asleep.

I once mentioned this comic on my college radio show in which I took the audience back to 1967. The vaccine came out in 1966, four years after I had “rubeola”. I told the audience I’d rather the shot.

I spent most of my early childhood in the bar and store my parents ran, so I must have more antibodies than most.
