Oona: DOORA! What am I to do with you?! You've SCARED our GUEST!
Door handle: Sorry, Oona! I'll get the YO-YOS!
Noise: CREAK!
Oona: NO!! Not the...YO-YOS!!
Nancy: ???
I’m really enjoying this story. There was a time when I skipped Nancy every day because I thought it was boring. But Guy has revived it to a fresh, new and enjoyable strip. Maybe Guy would like to give the Benders, over at Alley Oop, some lessons?
I was hoping this Oona story was just for Halloween. This is not the quality I’m used to. But silly me, I’m still checking the strip every day because I know the good ones will be back soon.
I recently bookmarked a large number of “classic” strips like this one and have spend the past couple weeks deciding which are worth keeping as favorites. I don’t recall story arcs on Nancy, but this one looks like it might be interesting (in a Tim Burton sort of way).
And I agree with Davidf42…Alley Oop’s “Frankenstein” arc looks pretty lame. And it’s been going on since August? Yeesh! Gasoline Alley needs to get a clue going, too. I’m loving the “Fearless Fosdick” arc rerun on Li’l Abner, though.
These are something more like the Yo-yos as I remember them.
For those who came in late, Oona Goosepimple and the Yo-yos were invented around 1960 for the Dell “Nancy” comic book by the great John “Little Lulu” Stanley. They may have been influenced by Addams’ creations (which at the time had no names and appeared only in single panels without dialog in “The New Yorker”, but they probably had as much to do with the characters of Witch Hazel and Little Itch in the fairy tales that Stanley’s version of Lulu would make up about her avatar, the Poor Little Girl, when she needed to make neighbor brat Alvin calm down.
In any case, Walt Disney had nothing to do with it.
Guy, do I remember a panel from the old Nancy comic book that was very much like your panel 3, with the Yo-Yos carrying Nancy up a flight of stairs on something like a door? :-) Or am I imagining this?
Thanks, Guy. I can relate. It’s hard to remember everything of a long-running series…especially when you last saw it when you were a kid. Those were my dad’s comics. He got lots of different titles, including Nancy, Little Lulu, Pogo, Mad Magazine, Uncle Scrooge (my favorite!), all the Donald Ducks and Mickey Mouses and L’il Abner, etc., etc. Learned to read from Dad reading me Little Lulu comic books. Those were the days! Anyway, as I said before, the Yo-Yos gave me nightmares when I was a kid. Yours are smaller, thankfully! But we shall see if they are as sinister!

It is fun to read this strip, making fresh ideas out of old ideas. Thank you, Guy.

So, when are Ooma’s parents going to invite the rest of the gang over for dinner? Can’t wait to see what they’re gonna have.

I had a lot of fun writing and drawing this very different arc. I’ll be interested to hear your comments as it goes where it goes…..
