This is part of life I had very little exposure to; and now that I’m older (and more stoic), it still breaks my heart when kids have to go thru stuff like that.
Agnes should be great on the debate team. she is very well versed in the old saying: “If you can’t dazzle ’em with brilliance, baffle them with bullchips”
I had to read the first panel several times, andI still don’t get Trout’s question. Agnes didn’t say that she’s starting a debate team- she said she’s trying out for it. That implies that one already exists. So why does Trout imply that Agnes joining an established team is some sort of duplication?
Trout was merely saying that she thought the debate team was already full…already rostered…no room for one more. Sorry it was so confusing to you Thomas.
When I was first married, at the end of the hippie era, we were very independent. Before we were married, while my husband was still in college and working full time, he moved out of his parents’ house. He got the cheapest housing he could find, an ancient trailer in an equally ancient trailer park run by a crook, in a flood plain surrounded by forest preserve. When we married and had two incomes, we were among the better-off of the residents in terms of resources in a number of ways. The stories that came out of that park…!The crook took advantage of the residents’ poverty, tenuous ability to cope with life, fear and sometimes just plain ignorance of their rights. By comparison, Agnes’ grandmother is doing a stellar job of caring for Agnes. Her calm acceptance of Agnes’ out-there interior life while keeping her in touch with reality is truly admirable.
Agnes will be fine. You don’t need real facts to make a point, viz. “The Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotimoline”, Isaac Asimov, Astounding Science Fiction, March 1948

Funny & Heart-wrenching at the same time.
[I’ve found references to both “heart-wrenching” & “heart-renching”. I like the one with the “w” best.]

Her first debate topic: “It’s all about me.”

Very cool, Mr. Cochrane, for you to be here.
I referred to one of your strips in a sermon a couple of years ago. Do I owe you any money?
